SHO KOSUGI: WEAPONS MASTER, WEAPONS DESIGNER

ORIGINAL PROP WEAPONS

When I first started planning this article there was no thought of having a section devoted exclusively to used props, because at that point, aside from the used original SK NINJA-TŌ that I received from Sho in 2017 and which I discussed in my First Blog, I was only aware of two other original prop weapons from Sho's films in the hands of fans.  As we will soon see, this is no longer the case thanks primarily to some massive and unexpected events in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

"NINJA III: THE DOMINATION"
PROP SK NINJA BELT BUCKLE

Anyone who has ever seen REVENGE OF THE NINJA or NINJA III: THE DOMINATION will immediately recognize this very iconic and distinctive SK NINJA BELT BUCKLE, as this original version with no "NINJA" letters engraved on the shuriken was used by Sho in both of these films.

I first became aware of this used prop when I stumbled upon it on yourprops.com many years ago.  The lucky owner of this great item is named Steve and he generously supplied these great pictures.  Hailing from the United Kingdom, he is a massive fan of NINJA III: THE DOMINATION, as evidenced by his Instagram and Facebook pages dedicated to the film, and he also has one of the actual greyish-green "Black Ninja" costumes from NINJA III: THE DOMINATION worn by the late David Chung, Lucinda Dickey, fight double Alan Amiel, or one of the stunt performers.  Both of these great props were given to Steve by one of the film's crew members over 18 years ago.

"NINJA ASSASSIN"
PROP OZUNU CLAN NINJA-TŌ

The other prop weapon from one of Sho's films that I'd previously seen online was this screen-used OZUNU CLAN NINJA-TŌ (小角家 忍者刀) from NINJA ASSASSIN, which was auctioned off on propstoreauction.com on September 26, 2017.  Listed as "Raizo's (Rain) Sword NINJA ASSASSIN (2009)" it featured a number of great photos and was described as the sword that Raizo (Rain) wielded in various fight scenes throughout the film, most notably in his fight against his elder brother, Takeshi (Rick Yune).

The auction listing also gave some great details on the materials and dimensions of the item: The sword is made of aluminum, with a wooden grip bound in black cloth and a metal tsuba.  A blood groove runs along the length of both sides of the blade, with three Japanese symbols engraved into the base of the blade. The blade itself has been blunted to prevent injury to performers. The cloth exposes a small amount of adhesive at the base of the grip, but the sword remains in very good condition.  Dimensions: 94 cm x 6.5 cm x 5.5 cm (37'' x 2 1/2'' x 2 1/4'').

If things had stayed as they were a couple of years ago when I first began to work on gathering up photos and information for this massive thesis on all of the weapons used in Sho's projects, that would have been the end of my presentation of used props.  But, as we're about to see, things began to change soon after Sho joined Instagram and started sharing details about his upcoming YIN-YANG CODE novels . . .

"YIN-YANG CODE"
PROP SK NINJA-TŌ PRIZE GIVEAWAY

In an Instagram post on October 26, 2016, Sho revealed that he and co-author Warren H. Chaney were dedicating the first book YIN-YANG CODE: THE DRUMS OF TENKAI-BO to Sho's late friend, director Gordon Hessler, and that in his honor he'd be giving away one of his swords that had been used in the films Mr. Hessler directed: PRAY FOR DEATH, RAGE OF HONOR, or SHOGUN MAYEDA (aka JOURNEY OF HONOR).

Subsequent posts by Legendary International Publications, Inc.'s Instagram account (@lilipinc) on August 30, 2017 and August 31, 2017 revealed that there would be 3 prizes and included was a picture of the exact SK NINJA-TŌ that would be the 1st Prize.  All 3 prize winners were officially announced in a post on February 8, 2018.  Surprisingly, considering the original intent was for the sword to be from one of the Hessler directed films, it was listed as being from REVENGE OF THE NINJA and NINJA III: THE DOMINATION, which were directed by Sam Firstenberg.  In any event, I'm sure the winner didn't mind, and Mr. Hessler was indeed honored not only in the dedication page of the novels, but also with the 2nd prize in the giveaway, a leather jacket and gloves from RAGE OF HONOR.

PROP SWORDS in
"THE ART OF HOLLYWOOD NINJA ACTION FILM MAKING"

In between the time that the prize giveaway was announced in October 2016 and sent to the winner in February 2018, we also got a look at a vintage fourth version SK NINJA-TŌ, along with some other prop swords, in the sensational 5-part DVD series THE ART OF HOLLYWOOD NINJA ACTION FILM MAKING, released in April 2017.

As was previously covered, the various swords featured in the video series also included a number of the prop BAMBOO-BLADED KATANA long-swords that were used in the "Sword Choreography" segment, a number of the ALUMINUM-BLADED SK NINJA-TŌ prop doubles from Sho's numerous 1980s ninja projects, and a nice METAL-BLADED KATANA.

Sho also posed for some great photos holding the pristine fourth version SK NINJA-TŌ seen in the DVD's closing segment.

PROP SWORDS at
AN EVENING WITH THE LEGENDARY SHO KOSUGI

In the span of the year between March 2018 and April 2019, Sho dusted off more of his old weapons and appeared in person at 3 great events.

On March 14, 2018, a special event entitled AN EVENING WITH LEGENDARY JAPANESE MARTIAL ARTIST AND ACTOR SHO KOSUGI was held in the Hilton 100 auditorium at the Hilton Center for Business on the Loyola Marymount University Campus in Los Angeles, California.  At this event, Sho had one of his assistants bring out a large number of different prop swords, which included at least one of the TACHI swords from PRAY FOR DEATH, numerous prop KATANA, and what appears to be a third version SK NINJA-TŌ.

During this great appearance, Sho demonstrated how to hide the ninja sword from an opponent by wielding it with a reverse grip.

Sho also explained the differences between the standard katana and the ninja sword.  The prop KATANA that Sho held up for this was one of the black versions sold by SHO KOSUGI NINJA ENTERPRISES in the 1980s and used in so many of Sho's films.

Following this presentation, Sho grabbed some of the prop BAMBOO-BLADED KATANA and performed an impressive sword duel demonstration with Timothy Saito, who had organized the event.

PROP SWORDS at the 2018 WEEKEND OF HELL

On Saturday November 3rd and Sunday November 4th, 2018, Sho made his first appearance at a fan convention at the WEEKEND OF HELL Euro-Comicon in Dortmund, Germany.  As seen in these snapshots from a fan-recorded video of one of the events, Sho demonstrated his skills with a third version SK NINJA-TŌ.

As he'd done at the Loyola Marymount University, Sho also explained the differences between the ninja sword and the standard katana, once again using the same third version SK NINJA-TŌ and SHO KOSUGI NINJA ENTERPRISES KATANA.

PROP WEAPONS at the 2019 CHILLER THEATER EXPO

From Friday April 26th to Sunday April 28th, 2019, Sho appeared at the CHILLER THEATER EXPO in Parsippany, New Jersey.  As previously covered in the BIOGRAPHY section, Sho thrilled those in attendance at a Q&A session held on Saturday by showing off some original props from his own personal collection.  On May 1, 2019, a fan who had recorded this very cool Q&A session and weapons presentation posted it on YouTube.

As seen in the video, the first two weapons presented were a third version SK NINJA-TŌ from PRAY FOR DEATH or MASTER CLASS or RAGE OF HONOR and the DAI TATAMI-JŪJI SHURIKEN (Large Folding Cross Shuriken) from 9 DEATHS OF THE NINJA.

This was followed by a single TEKAGI and a pair of SAI, possibly from ENTER THE NINJA or REVENGE OF THE NINJA.

Sho then brought out a pair of SHO-SHIN-BŌ like the ones used in NINJA THEATER HOSTED BY SHO KOSUGI, and a KYOKETSU-SHŌGE from 9 DEATHS OF THE NINJA.

For his final weapons, Sho brought out two different KUSARI-FUNDŌ from THE MASTER, one with metal weights and one with wooden weights.

PROP WEAPONS on the LIP INC. YOUTUBE CHANNEL

A month prior to the CHILLER THEATER EXPO appearance, Sho had also begun to create and post new videos on the official LIP INC. YouTube Channel, and starting with the 9th video, Sho Kosugi's Pick, "Rooftop-Action-sequences Part #1, REVENGE", posted on July 29, 2019, Sho began to feature some of his old prop weapons in some very cool introductory segments.  What follows are screenshots of every weapon presented as of March 1, 2021.

SHO KOSUGI MOVIE WEAPONS & PROPS AUCTION #1
Sept. 30th, 2019 to Oct. 7th, 2019 12:00 PM Pacific Time

During the first week of October 2019 an absolutely incredible auction of some of Sho's own personal collection of used prop weapons (including some of the same ones featured in the aforementioned YouTube videos) was held on Instagram. Organized by Legendary International Publications, Inc. (@liplipinc), in association with Sho, it featured 19 separate listings consisting of a total of 26 individual weapons from a variety of different films and TV shows.  What follows are each of these auction listings accompanied by some additional photos supplied by liplipinc and/or Sho, photos posted on Instagram and on this Facebook fan group, and some high quality photos graciously supplied by the fans from Germany, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States who were the lucky winning bidders of some of these amazing props.

NOTE: Although every weapon included in the auction was described as having been specifically used in one or more of Sho's films and/or TV shows, in some cases the weapon in question simply cannot be found in the final film or TV show.  This is because...

∑    There were literally hundreds of the same weapons (especially SK NINJA-TŌ) used in numerous takes during filming, not only by Sho, but by every other martial artist, stuntman, and actor who portrayed a ninja in every Sho ninja project filmed between 1982 and 1986 (REVENGE OF THE NINJA, NINJA III: THE DOMINATION, THE MASTER, 9 DEATHS OF THE NINJA, PRAY FOR DEATH, MASTER CLASS, NINJA THEATER HOSTED BY SHO KOSUGI, RAGE OF HONOR and HONDA HURRICANE COMMERCIAL).  This makes finding the exact weapon or a specific SK NINJA-TŌ in one of these projects virtually impossible.

∑    A number of these weapons were reportedly used in scenes that were ultimately deleted from the final version.

∑    As these weapons were used in films and/or TV shows well over 30 years ago, and often used in multiple different projects, it's understandable that it would be extremely difficult to know exactly where all of them were used.

For these reasons, I was not able to include "AS SEEN IN..." screenshots to go along with every weapon listed on the auction.  A few weapons only appeared in one project, so for those it's easy to include screenshots or photos with them, but for the others I only did so for the ones that I found an exact or indistinguishable match on screen, even if the film(s) or TV show differed from the one(s) listed in the auction description.  When possible, additional information and clarification that was given by someone from liplipinc and/or Sho has also been included.

In any event, the most important thing to remember about these weapons is that every single one of them came directly from Sho from his own personal collection.  So, without further ado, let's look at the awesome original prop weapons that were auctioned off to some very lucky fans.

Even though only one of these fourth version SK NINJA-TŌ was listed as being for sale, it seems that due to popular demand LIP INC. was able to acquire a few more of them from Sho's personal collection, as at least 3 lucky fans were able to buy nearly identical swords.

This first photo was graciously sent to me by mega-NINJA III fan Steve, who was thrilled to add it to his already impressive collection of props.

These photos of another fourth version SK NINJA-TŌ sold in this auction were graciously sent to me by a fan who prefers to remain anonymous.

Needless to say, I was thrilled to receive one of these awesome prop swords, particularly when, after seeing it in person, I recognized it as the sword from the temple flashback scene in PRAY FOR DEATH.  I thanked Sho for this wonderful TACHI sword and asked him if I was correct about the origin of the sword being from PRAY FOR DEATH instead of SHOGUN MAYEDA, to which Sho replied:

"You are absolutely correct about this sword which I used in "Pray for Death," but I took 8 Tachi-Swords of the same kind to old Yugoslavia
and I let Yorimune to wear it on the procession (all Samurai following) to the Spanish Castle and even Yorimune fought with this sword.

One of these two SHOBŌ (or more accurately SHO-SHIN-BŌ) can be seen in the introduction of The Original Ninja, "Sho Kosugi" Then & Now #2 posted on LIP INC.'s YouTube Channel on October 20, 2019, and the Sho Kosugi's Pick, "The Master Class" video which was posted on LIP INC.'s YouTube Channel on December 12, 2019.

SHO KOSUGI MOVIE WEAPONS & PROPS SALE
Sept. 22nd, 2020 to Sept. 24th, 2020

Surprisingly, in spite of having stated unequivocally at the end of November 2019 that Sho "wonít sell any more his moviesí weapons NEVER", a post on Instagram on September 18, 2020 revealed that more weapons would in fact be sold.  A subsequent post on September 21, 2020 included six photos of these 23 weapons, which consisted of 15 swords (9 SK Ninja-Tō, 2 Aluminum-bladed SK Ninja-Tō, 1 Shikomizue, 1 Katana, 2 Wakizashi), as well as 2 Bokken, 2 Sho-Shin-Bō, 2 Tekagi, 1 Nunchaku-yari, and 1 Kusari-Fundō with wooden weights, all tagged as being used in Sho's movies and TV shows.  The only difference with the previous weapons sold by Sho and LipLipInc, was that this time around it wasn't an auction but was instead a direct sale with each weapon sold in a "first-come, first serve" basis by sending a DM to Liplipinc's Instagram account.

Of the weapons included in this lot the most interesting one was unquestionably the SHIKOMIZUE with the hidden KOZUKA in the handle (3).  Although this prop weapon was incomplete, missing the scabbard with the hidden spear, this was in my opinion the best one in this lot and the only weapon that was distinctively and uniquely from REVENGE OF THE NINJA, wielded by Braden (Eddie Tse) in the film's incredible rooftop finale. The following additional photos of this great prop were sent to me by LIP INC.

The excellent condition third version SK NINJA-TŌ with the hidden KOZUKA and removable handle cap KAKUSHI that was pictured at the top of this listing was without question the best sword offered during this entire sale.  The following additional photos of it were sent to me by LIP INC.

SHO KOSUGI SPECIAL SALE FOR THE LAST WEAPONS
March 23rd, 2021 8:00 AM to 6:00 PM Pacific Time

Unbelievably, one week after I'd finally finished my BLOG, Sho / LipLipInc posted another "Last" props weapon sale announcement on Instagram. Although this BLOG was never meant to be an on-going project after being posted, I decided to make an exception for this one small addendum.

FAN-OWNED PROP WEAPONS COLLECTIONS

Thanks in large part to the prop weapon auctions and direct sales, a number of longtime fans (myself included) have been able to build up some impressive collections of prop weapons.  Not all of us had to wait for these LIP INC. events though.  One lucky fan named Shawn acquired a number of cool weapons directly from Sho's old store in San Gabriel, California in the 1980s.  These great photos were reportedly posted on Facebook and generously forwarded to me by some other fans.

This first weapon in Shawn's impressive props collection is an ALUMINUM-BLADED SK NINJA-TŌ, but one unlike any I've seen before.

The blade is like the prop ones used in REVENGE OF THE NINJA, but the tsuka-ito wrapping on the handle is in the "ninja style" which is inconsistent with the ninja swords used in that film as they were still wrapping the handles in the traditional "samurai style" at that point.  In any event, this is a very cool and unique prop that clearly had some use.

Not only does Shawn have that unique SK NINJA-TŌ, but he also has a matching SK NINJA-TANTŌ to go with it.  Unlike the SK NINJA-TŌ these were not mass produced or sold by SHO KOSUGI NINJA ENTERPRISES, so the fact that he has one of these rare props is absolutely amazing.

Almost all of Sho's ninja characters carried this TANTŌ, as it was basically what the Wakizashi (shōtō) was to the Katana (daitō) for samurai.  Much like Shawn's NINJA-TŌ, this TANTŌ is a little atypical, as most of the ones carried by Sho had traditional "samurai wrapping" on the handle, but once again this is a really great prop.

This iconic TEKKŌ-KAGI should be instantly recognizable to all   As this amazing weapon was manufactured and sold as The "Master" Tekagi by SHO KOSUGI NINJA ENTERPRISES, it's unclear if this is one of those retail versions (where the claw part folded backwards) or if it's one of the actual props used by Sho in the "Hostages" episode of THE MASTER and/or in photoshoots, but either way Shawn has a really cool weapon here.

This next prop is also amazing and rather unique.  Not only does this KUSARI-GAMA feature a very nice TANTŌ hidden in its handle, but it also features a wicked TETSUMARI (鉄毬) as a weight for its chain.  For those not familiar, a TETSUMARI was basically an iron ball made by fusing two shuriken together.

Somewhat surprisingly, nothing like this weapon ever appeared in any of Sho's films or TV shows, but as we will see in the next section a similar KUSARI-GAMA to this one was sold by SHO KOSUGI NINJA ENTERPRISES.  Also, as you can see from the last picture on the right, Shawn also got 4 of those cool MATSUBA-GATA (pine-needle shaped) BŌ SHURIKEN seen in REVENGE OF THE NINJA and NINJA III: THE DOMINATION (and used as menuki on the first version SK NINJA-TŌ).

Note: This KUSARI-GAMA is now owned by another fan (the aforementioned anonymous winner of multiple auctions), who acquired it via a trade. He sent me the following great photos.  According to liplipinc, this prop was used in deleted scenes from the opening of REVENGE OF THE NINJA.

This next weapon in Shawn's remaining collection appears to be a metal with a switch that turns it into a YARI.  Although it doesn't appear to be any of the ones used in Sho's projects, this is definitely very similar to many of them and may have been a prototype.  In any event, it is definitely another cool piece.

When I first saw the pictures of this final weapon in Shawn's collection, I initially thought it might be a prop double for the extendable YUMI (Bow) used by Braden in REVENGE OF THE NINJA, but after looking at all of the various screenshots I did for this Blog, I discovered that this is actually the YUMI that was briefly seen in Cho Osaki's pre-battle ceremony and fired by Braden in the deleted scene in the original theatrical trailer.

Moreover, this is the same YUMIYA that was used by Okasa (Sho) in the very first episode of THE MASTER.  Very cool indeed.

I'm thrilled to say that I've also managed to amass a nice diverse collection of screen-used prop weapons from Sho's ninja films and TV shows.  Nine of my 10 prop weapons are preserved in a great one-of-a-kind 4' x 3' custom-made shadowbox with a seamless sideways-sliding glass door.

My other 2 used props are housed in similar-looking standard shadow boxes which I purchased at a local art supplies, crafts & framing store.
